Kiddush (Communion) Cup

The Kiddush Cup or wine goblet is used on Shabbat (Sabbath) as well as every Holiday. On Friday evening at the beginning of the Shabbat meal it is filled with the fruit of the vine which is wine or grape juice.

There is a blessing that is recited over the fruit of the vine before the meal begins. After the blessing everyone present shares the wine. Here is the blessing.

Barukh atah Adonai, Elohaynu, melekh ha-olam, borei p’riy ha-gafen.

Blessed are You, Lord, our God, king of the universe who creates the fruit of the vine.
